Bronze From the left, “Potential”, “Chase”, “Sublime”, “Return-B ??????” Masaaki Noda Exhibition Message from New York The exhibition at the Fukuyama Art Museum (2006) marked a major milestone as a summary of his 34-year career as a writer. During the two-month period, Ms. Maako Kido, former Met curator: Robert Stephen Bianchi, University of Tsukuba professor: Masahiko Moriya gave a lecture, New York Mikami Kuni jazz performance, children’s painting class, etc. He planned with the curator Omae and appeared in newspapers, TV and radio every day. There were a lot of repeaters. There were many encounters, and many planning projects were launched after that. The monument “Now is the future”, which was set up in 2012 to commemorate the 95th anniversary of Fukuyama City administration, is a symbol of this. Currently, there are 13 public monuments to Fukuyama City, which connect to Hiroshima City, Matsue City, Kyoto Prefecture, Shinjuku Ward, New York, Greece, and China. 8/28/2020

Bronze is made of alloys such as copper, tin, zinc and nickel, and its color changes depending on the content of each metal. It becomes a bronze patina due to wind and rain and the passage of time. In acid rain in Japan, it is difficult to evenly become bronze patina color, and maintenance is troublesome and requires considerable cost. The surface of bronze statues, which are placed outdoors without maintenance, has been corroded and deteriorated by acid rain and wind and snow for many years. Due to the deterioration of the old bronze statues (and the marble statues), they are now preserved indoors and most of the outdoors are replicas. Since this work is for indoor use, it is finished with a clear color. Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture 2005

“Pursuit” Beside the large stainless steel sculpture monument project, I continued to produce bronze in Kyoto. There is a limit to the development of stainless steel alone, and even if you start later, it will take a long time to reach the matured perfection.  We are always producing in different media in parallel. Prints and paintings are also proceeding at the same time with a completely different approach. Chiguhagu is what you want, and even if it looks like there is no vein, the last thing you can see is the mutual relationship created by the medium. The ideal is to merge different worlds.

“Pursuit” was produced at a the Yagi factory in Kyoto over several months between 2003 and 2004. During that time, I got a uniform from Yagi Seisakusho and worked as a member of the factory. In Kyoto, the city of craftsmen, there were many talented and talented workers from Kyoto City University of Arts, Seika University, etc., including genuine craftsmen, and there were many things to be learned. Originally as a painter, I am now a sculptor because of the support of many people. In my early thirties, I never thought I would become a sculptor. There are crossroads in life where unexpected things happen, and each time we meet people who can be called key persons. Yagi Seisakusho, Kyoto 2004

Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, is one of Japan’s leading casting towns, and castings are exhibited throughout the city. Before Takaoka, it was cast in Kyoto, but the engraving became complicated, and due to cost and technical problems, it was decided to manufacture in Takaoka. In that case, we did not accept casting of only one point, so we cast five points at once. Normally, it is difficult to pull out complicated shapes, so I divide it into several parts and weld them later, but in that case the welded part remains, so I forced myself to cast it without dividing it. The work was difficult, but it finished beautifully. I observed the casting process, but the pouring at a high temperature of over 1000 degrees was done by three craftsmen in a sense of urgency, in a fluid collaborative work. I have seen various work processes in various factories, but I am impressed by the different craftsmanship. Unlike painting in a studio alone, sculptures are made in the context of many people. As a result, my view of the world as a writer changed drastically.
