    ARTIST COMMENTS

    I started to draw monochrome paintings on canvas with mixed media. I repeatedly applied gesso to the canvas and used sanding to smooth the surface, which took days to prepare. Unlike paper, it is not glued well and is tough, but I’ve come to be able to give it a solid taste as much as I feel resistance. The idea for the work came from the Caravaggio angels, who were observing the classic painter hard these days.

    40 years old at that time I was still bearded.

    モノクロ絵画を、ミックスメディアでキャンバスに描き始めました。 キャンバスにジェッソを何度も塗り、サンディングで表面をスムースにする作業を繰り返したので、下準備に何日もかかるようになりました。 紙と違ってのりが悪く手強いのですが、抵抗感の分だけ重厚味が出せるようになっていきました。 作品のアイデアは、カラバッジオの天使達からで、この頃はクラシックペインターを懸命に観察していました。 当時４０歳 まだ髭を生やしていました。 １９８９年 Photo: 伊藤時男
